Man Up!

Man Up! by Elsworth Rockefeller and Rollie Welch and Summer Hayes

(February 2010 to February 2015, Retired column)

Man Up! addresses serving guys in the library.

Rollie Welch has worked as a school librarian, a teen librarian with a suburban/rural public library system, a teen coordinator, and now as collection manager for Cleveland Public Library. He always ran into boys who were interested in books, but they were reluctant to show their enthusiasm for reading. Welch is the author of The Guy Friendly Library: Serving Male Teens (Libraries Unlimited, 2007) and the  second edition of A Core Collection for Young Adults (Neal-Schuman, 2011).
Elsworth Rockefeller has spent his career working with teens in public libraries, first as a teen services librarian in Ocean County, New Jersey, and now as manager of teen services at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, Washington DC. He’s enjoyed working with teen guys throughout his years of service, and especially enjoys helping guys who don’t like to read to find materials that engage them.
Summer Hayes is currently a teen services librarian for the King County Library System and works in a library that serves the most diverse school district in the nation.  While she loves working with all teens, connecting teen guys, especially reluctant readers, with books and library services has always been a highlight. Hayes joined the column in 2012.
